Periodontics
What is periodontics?
Poor brushing causes food debris to accumulate in the interstices of the gum, forming a microscopic conglomerate of microbes called dental plaque. Gradually, the gum becomes inflamed and reddened, forming a pathology called gingivitis. Progressively, the gingival infection spreads, destroying the bone and the ligaments that hold the tooth, a pathology that becomes known as periodontitis, causing tooth mobility that progressively leads to tooth loss.
Periodontics is the branch that studies the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these pathologies. Good tartar removal and oral hygiene techniques are essential, as periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and is suffered by more than 90% of adults over 35 years of age.

FAQ's about periodontics
Sometimes periodontal disease can progress without any symptoms or pain. During a regular dental check-up, the dentist looks for signs of periodontal disease, to treat it as soon as possible if necessary.
Symptoms are bleeding spontaneously or with brushing, the appearance of pus in the gum, redness, bad taste or smell in the mouth, gingival recession, thermal sensitivity, pain, mobility and separation between teeth… A diagnosis of certainty can only be made by the periodontist.
To prevent gingivitis and periodontitis, we must try to avoid the formation of plaque, which forms quickly after ingesting food, but which can be eliminated with good oral hygiene. Otherwise, inflammation of the gums can appear within a few days and plaque can end up forming calculus, favouring bacterial growth.
Therefore, regular brushing and flossing will help prevent plaque formation. To remove any calculus that may have formed, it is necessary to visit the dentist for a professional dental cleaning.
Tobacco reduces the blood supply to the gum tissues, reducing their ability to defend themselves against bacteria. This effect is related to the number of cigarettes consumed. In patients who stop smoking, after a few months, the gum acquires characteristics that make it similar to those of a person who has never smoked, which is why eliminating smoking is a guarantee of health for the gum.
