Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is a speciality of dentistry that encompasses surgical operations performed in the oral cavity (teeth, mucous membranes and accessory tissues) to fix or remove pathological or defective anatomical elements.

Surgical Interventions

Oral surgery is usually performed in the same dental clinic and does not generally require major interventions and can therefore be carried out under local anaesthesia. Occasionally, for very extensive surgeries or because the patient’s condition requires it, the intervention will be carried out with the help of sedation.

The oral surgeon must have a thorough knowledge of the basic sciences of his profession, such as anatomy, histology and physiology of the oral cavity. In addition to his or her training, surgical training and manual dexterity, it is indispensable that the practitioner has maturity of thought and a great respect for living tissues. The most frequent surgical interventions are wisdom tooth extraction, cyst extraction, bone grafting for subsequent implant placement and frenulum surgery.

Do wisdom teeth need to be extracted?

Wisdom teeth do not serve any fundamental function as they are not involved in chewing and are not visible when smiling. It is very likely that their eruption will cause infection, pain and displacement of other teeth. It is difficult to have good hygiene in the area where they are located, as access is complicated, and they can cause premature contacts that alter the occlusal balance, which can lead to muscular pain and problems in the temporomandibular joint. We recommend the extraction of wisdom teeth.
